Watercolour looks hard, but it is actually the most forgiving and fun medium for children to learn. The secret is understanding a few simple principles before you start. At Art Junction in Kalyan East, watercolour is one of the first mediums we introduce to our Seedlings and Buds students — and these are the 5 tips we give every beginner.
Tip 1: Always Wet Your Paper First
Before adding any colour, lightly wet the area of paper you want to paint with clean water. This technique — called wet-on-wet — allows colours to blend softly and naturally, creating beautiful gradients. It is much harder to get muddy colours with this approach. For a sky, wet the whole paper and watch the blue flow perfectly.
Tip 2: Use Good Quality Brushes
The biggest mistake beginners make is using cheap brushes. A poor brush leaves streaks and cannot hold enough water. At Art Junction, we recommend Camlin round brushes in sizes 4, 8, and 12 for children. These are affordable and available everywhere in Kalyan. One good brush is worth ten bad ones.
Tip 3: Let Layers Dry Before Adding More
Watercolour is painted in layers. If you add a second colour before the first has dried, they bleed together and create muddy browns. Patience is the key skill in watercolour. While waiting, work on a different part of the painting — never rush a wet area.
Tip 4: Mix Colours on a Palette, Never on the Paper
Always mix your colours on a separate palette or plate before applying them to your painting. Mixing directly on the paper damages the surface and creates uneven textures. Mix more than you think you need — running out of a colour halfway is frustrating and hard to match.
Tip 5: Use Less Paint Than You Think You Need
Watercolour is transparent by nature. Start with very diluted, light washes and build up to darker colours gradually. You can always add more paint, but you cannot easily take it away. This is called working light to dark, and it is the foundation of all professional watercolour technique.
✅ Bonus Tip: Clean Your Brush Between Every Colour
This sounds obvious but is the most commonly broken rule! Keep two jars of water — one for rinsing, one for clean water. Change the rinse water frequently. Clean brushes are the difference between fresh, vibrant colours and muddy, dull ones.
